Kamppi

Kamppi ( swedish Kampen ) is a branch (Finnish osa - alue ) and a district ( kaupunginosa ) in the center of Helsinki, west of the road Mannerheimintie.

History

The name Kamppi has its origin in the Swedish word Kampen ( Struggle), which refers to the field that was at this point in the 17th century. The first building on the site was planned by Carl Ludwig Engel Turku barracks in 1833. This was almost completely destroyed during the Finnish Civil War. Only one building remained standing and in 1935 expanded to the bus station of Helsinki. The field was paved and served since then as a terminal for buses in the local traffic.

1983, the Kamppi metro station was inaugurated in Helsinki. Many of the buildings in the area were renovated in the 1990s, including the Cultural Lasipalatsi ( built in 1937 ) and at the multiplex cinema converted building Tennispalatsi ( 1952). In June 2005, the new regional and long-distance bus station was commissioned in Kamppi Center in operation. This 2006 finally finished complex also houses one of the largest shopping centers in Finland.
