Kamyzyak

Kamysjak (Russian Камызяк ) is a city in the Oblast Astrakhan (Russia) with 16,314 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the Caspian Sea basin, in the Volga Delta about 35 km south of Oblasthauptstadt Astrakhan below the point where the Volga estuary Kisan branched into the arms Kamysjak and Tabola.

Kamysjak is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

With Astrakhan Kamysjak is connected by a road.

History

Kamysjak was founded in the 17th century as a small fishing settlement, received in 1918 the status of an independent village ( selo ) and on 2 February 1973, the city law. The name is derived from the Kazakh words kamys for ledges and OSEK / usjak for Bayou.

Culture, Education and sights

South of the city extends one of the parts of the nature reserve Astrakhan Sapowednik. It was founded in 1919, is recognized as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, and since 1984 as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1975.

In the area there are several archaeological monuments: the remains ( " Gorodischtsche " ) the settlement Samosdelka and the grave mound Karakol and Bolshoi Hadji.

In Kamysjak the Scientific Research Institute of Vegetable and Pumpkin Culture irrigation economy is ( НИИ орошаемого овощеводства и бахчеводства ).

Economy

Kamysjak is the center of an agricultural area ( rice, fruit, melons, poultry, cattle ). Then based companies in the food industry ( rice processing Kamris, cannery Chemosh ). In Rajon there are also fishing industry.
