Kan B'alam I

Kan Bahlam I. ( born September 18, 524; † February 1 583 ) was a ruler ( Ajaw ) of the Mayan city of Palenque. He ruled on 6 April 572 until his death. He was the first ruler of Palenque, which is connected to the sun god name k'inich ( " radiant " ) added his name.

Origin and family

Kan Bahlam I was (13 Ch'en Long Count 9.4.10.1.5, Calendar Round 11 Chikchan ) was born on 18 September 524. Since he was born just a year after his predecessor Ahkal Mo ' Nahb II, it is generally assumed that this was his brother. The familial relationship with his successor Yohl Ik'nal is unclear.

Reign

Ahkal Mo ' Nahb II died on July 21, 570 ( 9.6.16.10.7, 9 Manik ' 5 Yaxk'in ). Kan Bahlam I. ascended the throne but not until nearly two years later, on April 6, 572 ( 9.6.18.5.12 10 Eb 0 Wo). From an inscription from the Temple of the Inscriptions in Palenque show that under his rule celebrations took place at the end of two calendar periods: On December 3, 573 ( 9.7.0.0.0 ) and on November 7, 578 ( 9.7.5.0.0 ). More events of his reign are unknown. He died on 11 February 583 ( 11 9.7.9.5.5 Chikchan 3 K'ayab ) apparently without leaving a male heir. On December 23, 583 Yohl Ik'nal boarded the first woman to the throne of Palenque.
