Kanchanadit District

Amphoe Kanchanadit ( Thai: อำเภอ กาญจนดิษฐ์ ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district ) in the east of the province of Surat Thani. The Surat Thani Province is located in the southern region of Thailand.

Geography

The district lies in the eastern part of the province. It extends from the coast of Ban Don Bay in the Gulf of Thailand to the north of the river valley of the Tapi Maenam Nakhon Si Thammarat up to the mountain range in the west and south. This is also the Tai Rom Yen National Park, which was established on 31 December 1991. The largest river of the district is Maenam Thathong ( แม่น้ำ ท่า ทอง ), which flows near the provincial capital in the Tapi.

The neighboring districts are ( from east clockwise) Amphoe Don Sak in the province of Surat Thani, Amphoe both Sihon and Nopphitam the province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Amphoe Ban Na San and the Mueang Surat Thani and wiedrtum in the province of Surat Thani. To the north lies the Gulf of Thailand.

Traffic

The main roads of the district are:

  • The " National Road 401 " ( ทางหลวง แผ่นดิน หมายเลข 401) - it connects the province of Phang Nga with the province of Nakhon Si Thammarat,
  • The " National Road 44" ( ทางหลวง แผ่นดิน หมายเลข 44) - it runs from the junction with the "Route 401 " in Surat Thani to southwest across the Malay Peninsula to the province of Krabi.

History

Originally the town was named Thathong ( ท่า ทอง ) and lay on the Khlong Thathong Soon ( คลอง ท่า ทอง ใหม่ - at that time it was still called Khlong Tha Phechon - คลอง ท่า เพชร ). Since the city was heavily infested with malaria, it was during the reign of Phra Nang Klao ( King Rama III. ) Moved to its present location and renamed Kanchanadit. It was a provincial city ( Mueang ) under the control of the Kingdom of Nakhon Si Thammarat. In 1899, the city has been combined with Chaiya and thus became a Amphoe.

Attractions

  • Training Center for monkeys - Seven kilometers east of the provincial capital of Surat Thani is a school for macaques, which are trained for three months for the harvest of coconuts. This school was established in 1957 by Somporn Saekow (1940 - August 20, 2002, Thai สม พร แซ่ โค้ ว ) set up on the advice of his Buddhist teacher Buddhadasa Bhikkhu. Since it is illegal in Thailand to catch wild monkeys and dogs which brought many farmers monkeys from their own culture in this school to let them train here. The school was in Thailand so famous over the years that Somporn 1963 with his favorite monkey Khai Nui with the " National Games " was allowed to carry the flag of the province. Somporn died in 2002 of a heart attack, his school but is run by his family on.

Management

Amphoe Kanchanadit is divided into 13 communes ( tambon), which continues in 117 villages ( Muban ) are divided.

There are three small towns ( thesaban tambon) in the district:

  • Kanchanadit consists of the whole tambon Ka Dae,
  • Tha Thong May consists of parts of the tambon Tha Thong Mai,
  • Chang Sai consists of the whole tambon Chang Sai.

In addition, there are eleven " Tambon Administrative Organizations" (TAO, องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - administrative organizations) in the district.
