The candelabra is 1241.4 m above sea level. NHN is the highest elevation in the Middle Black Forest and the mountain town of Waldkirch. However, Due to its exposed position off comparable mountains he seems much higher.

Geology and relief

The candelabra is part of the central Black Forest gneiss area. The massif is tectonically conditioned in its bulk form: The Kandel Flounder increases inclined form of the plateau to St. Peter to the northwest at. It is surrounded by faults, some of which are emerging as significant terrain edges; as the Rhine valley are more than 1000 meters and the peaks beyond the Elztales 500-600 meters deeper than the candelabra. The ongoing uplift of the Kandel - clod over the Rhine Valley (1-2 mm / yr ) manifests itself sometimes in earthquakes.

The Kandel solid dissolved by deep valleys radially partly rounded, partly rocky ridge. The cliffs reach to the southwest ( Glottertal ) 600 m to the northwest ( Elztalhotel ) 650 m and north-east (Valley of Wild Gutach ) over 700 m. Only southeastward the mountain covered gradually, towards Saint Peter by 500 m and the plate on the Zweribachwasserfällen out by a good 200 meters. The vast grassland rich southern slope leads to significant thermal and influenced by the here often resulting large thunderstorm cells the weather patterns of the Breisgaues.

The going back to the ice age glaciations form elements of the massif occur in the landscape less clear in appearance than other Black Forest mountains of similar height.

Sports and Leisure Facilities

On Kandel different typical for mountainous regions recreational opportunities being offered, among other things, there are trails for hiking and cycling, for example, the southern part of Kandel High Route of the Black Forest Association. At Great Kandel rock can be climbed and there is a launch site for hang gliders and paragliders. Even cyclists use the mountain for a driveway, the 926 meters in altitude overcomes to 12 kilometers, which corresponds to an average gradient of 7.7 %, which makes the road also popular with motorcyclists.

In 2000, the third leg of Germany led tour of the candelabra. Udo Bölts the first to reach the summit. On August 13, 2005 took place in the context of regional tour, a mountain time trial from Waldkirch place on the candelabrum. Best Tony Martin was with a time of 33 minutes and 43 seconds.

Every year takes place the Kandel Mountain Run. Start at the main square of the city of Waldkirch, from there it goes over 980 m in altitude on the road to the pass. 2007 winner was Joseph Beha in 50:05 minutes, before Mark Jenne and Ulrich Benz.

The summit of Kandel can be alternatively achieved via a bus ( Kandel rest house ) of Freiburg on Denzlingen or St. Peter.

In the winter ski lifts are available and in good snow conditions a 5 km long trail is groomed.

Events around the candelabra

In the early modern period of the candelabra was considered the " block mountain in the Black Forest". The lower Elz Valley was one of the focal points of the persecution of witches in Germany. Walpurgis Night is celebrated as traditional customs.

The top of the rock Kandel, the Devil's Pulpit, broke 1981 on Walpurgis Night from 30 April to 1 May from. Approximately 2,000 cubic meters of rock broke away and are now below the rock. The coincidence on Walpurgis Night, and the fact that a broom was found between the rubble, resulted in residents' homes to demonic explanations of the rockfall. The real cause is still unclear, an initially suspected earthquake could be excluded on the basis of seismological records. The geographer Werner Bätzing hypothesized that a frost damage was present, which is caused by the change dewy and freezing water, especially in spring. In the garbage dump several icicles have been found to fit. The broom came demonstrably of the rock mechanic Peter Rambach, who performed in the months before the fall protection work on the rock.

On 5 December 2004, an earthquake of magnitude 5.43 on the Richter scale occurred. The epicenter was in the range Waldkirch / Kandel solid, the actual earthquake center about 12 km below.
