Kander (Switzerland)

The Kander at the entrance to Gasterntal

The Kander is a river in the Bernese Oberland. It is 46 km long and has a catchment area of 1126 km ². With an average water flow of nearly 43 m³ / s it is the second largest left tributary of the River Aare. The name is Kander ("The Shining ", " the White ") derived from the Celtic Kandara.

The source of the Kander is powered by Kanderfirn in Blüemlisalp area. In its upper reaches it flows through the Gasterntal. The section between Kandersteg and Frutigen is called Kander in the strict sense. Below Frutigen after the Kander has united with the Engstlige, called the valley Frutigtal. In Brodhüsi the almost equally large Simme flows into the Kander. Its present last short section is artificial. It is derived in the Kanderkorrektion 1714 through an incision in the Strättlighügel into Lake Thun. Previously ran the Kander below Thun in the Aare. There is now part of Glütschbach and Thun Allmendfeld.

Rafting on the Kander is extremely dangerous because of the many sleepers; the river is marked on the map as a relevant risk impassable. In June 2008, two inflatable boats capsized in the Swiss army while trying to drive down the Kander, with five army personnel were killed.
