Kangaroo Island dunnart

Sminthopsis aitkeni, known in English under the name Kangaroo Iceland dunnart ( "Kangaroo Island Schmalfuß bag mouse " ), is a Beutelsäugerart from the kind of Schmalfuß Bag mice. It occurs only on Kangaroo Island off the southern coast of Australia, where it inhabits forest and heath areas.

The coat of this bag mouse is colored light gray dark gray on the back and belly and face. It reaches a body length of about 86 mm and a tail length of about 100 millimeters. The weight varies 20 to 25 grams.

Little is known about the lifestyle. Presumably it feeds on insects and other small animals and plants in the dry season from September to January continued.

This species is the only mammal that is endemic to Kangaroo Island. Due to the destruction of their still very small habitat will be listed as endangered ( endangered ) Sminthopsis aitkeni by the IUCN.
