Kanlaon Volcano

The Kanlaon (also Canlaon written ) is a stratovolcano in the Philippines. It lies on the border between the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental in the Visayas group of islands belonging to the island of Negros about 36 kilometers southeast of Bacolod City. The Kanlaon is one of 22 active volcanoes in the Philippines.

Construction

The Kanlaon has an elevation of 2435 meters above sea level and a base diameter of 30 kilometers. On the mountain, there are numerous pyroclastic cones and craters. The summit consists of a wide, elongated caldera with a crater lake in the north and a smaller, but more active crater in the south.

Three hot springs are located on the slopes of the mountain, the Mambucal Hot Springs in the northwest, and the Bucalan Hot Spring and the Hot Spring Bungol. North of the Kanlaons are the volcanoes Silay and Mandalagan.

The Kanlaon in mythology

Outbreaks

The Kanlaon is the most active volcano in the central Philippines. Since 1886, 25 outbreaks were recorded. Typical are small to medium sized phreatic eruptions with low ash deposits in the vicinity of the volcano.

On August 10, 1996, there was an outbreak without warning, in which a British and two Filipino climbers lost their lives. 17 other climbers were rescued by the authorities. The mountain is a popular destination for climbers.

On 3 June 2006, the mountain once again showed activity, and spat steam and ash. On June 12, 2006 by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology ( PHIVOLCS ) Alarm Level 1 ( light activity ) was issued.

Mount Kanlaon Natural Park

Mount Kanlaon Natural Park was established in 1934 on an area of ​​248.54 km ² around the mountain. It was declared a National Park in 1997 and 2001 as a reserve in the Philippine Law on the Protection of the biosphere ( NIPAS ) was added.
