Kannemeyeriidae

Kannemeyeria

  • Worldwide

The Kannemeyeriidae are extinct terrestrial vertebrates from the group of therapsids ( " mammal -like reptiles "). They lived during the Middle and Upper Triassic. Fossils of the group North and South America, Europe, India and China have been found in Africa.

Features

They had a barrel-shaped body and a kurzschnäuzigen skull, similar to that of Lystrosaurus, where there was, in contrast to this, a narrow Intertemporalkamm. The skull reached lengths of 25 to 60 centimeters. The postcranial skeletons ( of the skull below the area of the skeleton ) was similar to that of the Permian Dicynodontia, but was still squat, stocky legs. The basin has a striking front lying outgrowth of the ilium ( ilium ) and a reduced pubic bone ( pubis ), which probably opened up the possibility that the animals were able to stand up on their hind legs to eat leaves of higher plants sections.
