Kantubek

Kantubek ( Russian: Кантубек ) was a city on the island of rebirth (Uzbekistan ) in the Aral Sea. The town is still marked on maps, but is no longer inhabited, and is now a ghost town. Kantubek had a population of about 1,500 people.

History

From the 1930s, were conducted as experiments with monkeys, the area served as a dumping ground for biological weapons. Here there was a sure -equipped laboratory of the Soviet authority Biopreparat.

Brian Hayes, a biochemical engineer of the Threat Reduction Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense, led in the spring and summer of 2002 by an expedition to clean the probably most contaminated by anthrax surface. Its 113 employees were able to neutralize between 100 and 200 tons within three months. The cost of the cleaning operation amounted to about 5 million U.S. dollars.
