Kaolack

Kaolack is the capital of Kaolack region in Senegal. Currently, the population is about 200,000. The city is located southeast of the capital, Dakar.

History

Kaolack is located on the right bank and about 100 kilometers from the mouth of the Saloum River and was the capital of the Kingdom of Saloum. The city was named in the early 16th century Kahone and was a central square, which was built around a sacred tree around. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the village consisted of a number of different neighboring tribes who had wide, open field around them. The slow-growing population has become increasingly Muslim and the religion of nature, which held its traditional rites on the opposite island Kouyong disappeared.

His followers meant by the word " Baay " " Father" ( in Wolof ). In Arabic, it refers to "The city Baay ". The faith community of Medina Baye has become an international institution with branches in many cities such as Kano, Nigeria and Chicago, Illinois.

Economy

Kaolack is the center of the Senegalese peanut industry. The peanut oil produced is exported to 90%. Moreover, it is one of the major trading centers and transport hub, particularly because of its port.

Environment

Kaolack is one of the dirtiest cities in Africa: On the streets of garbage remains often lie and a regulated waste disposal is still under construction. Sewers are mostly clogged or barely existent, which is standing brackish water is a strong source of infection for malaria and cholera contamination; the drinking water supply, however, has improved significantly.
