Kapchorwa District

Kapchorwa (formerly Sebei ) is a district in eastern Uganda on the border with Kenya. The main town is the same Kapchorwa. He had according to the census of 2002 160.600 inhabitants in an area of 1731.7 km ², but the present-day districts of Kween and Kapchorwa Bukwa have since been divested. For 2010 87.000 inhabitants were estimated for the remaining Kapchorwa.

Society

There are spoken Kupsabiny, Lumasaba and Swahili. Main ethnic groups are the Sabiny (86 %) and the Bugisu (10%)

The formerly prevalent in parts of the population infibulation could be pushed back as far as possible in the 1980s and 1990s.

Geography

The district is mountainous with altitudes of about 1500-2200 m above sea level. He is also a relatively rainy (900-1600 mm / year) and is crossed by several rivers that originate in the Mount Elgon massif. This is also the Mount Elgon National Park.

Economy

From touristic importance are the Sipi Falls. There are mainly cultivated corn, wheat, beans, sunflowers, yams, peas, potatoes and finger millet, cash crops are cotton, coffee and wheat. In addition, cattle, goats and sheep are kept.
