Kapčiamiestis

Kapčiamiestis ( German, 18th Century: Methenburg ) is a small town in the Rajongemeinde Lazdijai in the extreme south of Lithuania, close to the Polish and Belarusian border. Kapčiamiestis developed in the 19th century by its location on important routes to Suwalki and Grodno on a local market town. Today, the location in a wooded area town located on the banks of Baltoji ANCIA ( White ANCIA ) in a blind spot.

The Jewish community of Kapčiamiestis included in the interwar period, about 50 families, including 18 artisans and shopkeepers 9 ( = all the stores of Kapčiamiestis ). Almost all were taken on 15 September 1941 in a camp near Lazdijai and shot on November 3, 1941.

In Kapčiamiestis the grave of the Polish-Lithuanian countess and freedom fighter Emilie Plater is ( Emilija Pliaterytė ) ( 1806-1831 ).
