Kapiti Coast

Kapiti Coast ( formerly known as Golden Coast ) is a stretch of coastline on the North Island of New Zealand. It is located in the Wellington region, more precisely in the Kapiti Coast district north of the metropolitan area of ​​Wellington.

Namesake of this region is the location off the coast of Kapiti Island Iceland ( see picture).

The term " Kapiti " means in Māori "border". In the early settlement period, the coast and the island formed the boundary between two Māori tribes.

History

The Maori chief Te Rauparaha remained a base on Kapiti Iceland, of which he was made ​​to be able to launch attacks on other tribes during the Musketenkriege in the early 1800s. Around this time the Europeans began whaling in this area. On October 16, 1839 came William Wakefield of the New Zealand Company on the Kapiti Coast region to acquire land for permanent European settlements. Te Rauparaha sold him land in the Nelson and Golden Bay.

During the Second World War, the Queen Elizabeth Park was - a large piece of park between Paekakariki and Raumati - the location of the U.S. Army and the Marines. U.S. troops were stationed in the camps in 1942/44 and were sent from there to the battle grounds in the Pacific Ocean.

After the Second World War, the Rongotai Wellington Airport was closed for safety reasons and so 1947 was the Paraparaumu Airport 's main airport for the Wellington region. In 1949, this was the busiest airport in New Zealand and has helped to stimulate the growth on the Kapiti Coast. The Wellington airport was opened in 1959 and since then the Paraparaumu airport could never again reach their former status.

As of 2008, the Kapiti Coast has experienced a significant increase in population, making it one of the fastest growing areas in New Zealand. This has led to significant growth in all the cities except in Paekakariki, where development is limited geographically.

The Kapiti Coast is connected through the Metlink public transport network with the trains from Tranz Metro Wellington and other places (such as Porirua ). It takes the train about 40-60 minutes (depending on which one goes into station ) to the Wellington Railway Station to reach.
