Kapla

Kapla is a wooden toy for children and adults. Basic element is a cuboidal block of wood whose proportions are based on the odd numbers 1, 3 and 15.

Origin and characteristics

The idea for the Kapla blocks originated around 1985, when the Dutch art historian and antique dealer Tom van der Bruggen moved to France and was looking for a modular system for the design of his new domicile. The name Kapla comes from the Dutch word for " imp sticks ", Kabouter Plankjes.

Unlike other wood blocks Kapla stones are precisely machined and there is only a single form. This is cuboid in the ratio 15:3:1, which means that a block three times as wide as high and five times as long as wide. The length of a Kapla stone is 120 mm. The stones are made of pine wood and usually natural, but there are also colored stones available in six colors. Due to the small tolerances larger structures to be created (the building on the image requires about 800 blocks).
