Kapurthala State
Kapurthala was one of the Sikh princely states into the " Punjab States Agency " of British India. Its capital was the site of Kapurthala.
The principality was founded in 1772 by Jassa Singh, the head of the Ahluwalia clan ( Misl ) and a leader ( Sirdar ) of the Sikh Confederacy. Fateh Singh ( 1801-37 ) fought on the side of Ranjit Singh and assumed the title of Raja. Although Kapurthala was a British protectorate since 1806 ( until 1947 ), Nihal Singh fought ( 1837-52 ) against the British and had to cede his possessions south of the Satluj. Jagatjit Singh (1877-1949) was raised in 1911 for Maharaja; he was in 1926, 1927 and 1929, the observers of India at the League of Nations.
The Principality of 1901 had an area of 1551 km ² and 314 300 inhabitants. The Maharaja joined on 15 July 1948, the Patiala and East Punjab States Union ( PEPSU ) that was the deputy head of state ( Ujrajpramukher ), and took place on 20 August 1948, after India. On November 1, 1956 all princely states were dissolved and PEPSU became part of the Indian state of Punjab.
