Karamana River

The Karamana is a river in the South Indian state of Kerala. It flows through Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the state. The source of the 68 km long river is located on the southern foothills of the Western Ghats near the 1,868 m high mountain Agastya Malai. The westward flowing river flows in the catchment area of Poonthura into the Arabian Sea. The river is named after Karamana, a suburb of Thiruvananthapuram, through which it flows.

Although relatively short, two dams found in its course, namely the Peppara Dam, which accumulates mainly for irrigation water, and the Aruvikkara Dam, which also serves as a water reservoir for Thiruvananthapuram.

The most important tributary is the Killiyar which opens at Pallathukadavu in the Karamana. The source of the Killiyar located in the small town Panavoor, in the district Nedumangad Taluk.

The largest bridge spans the river at Karamana. Other major bridges are in Thrikkunnapuram, Mangattu Kadavu, Kadavu Kundamon, Vellaikadavu, Aruvikkara ( dam ), Maruthoor kadavu and Aryanad near Malamukal.
