The Karangetang (also: Api Siau ) is a 1784 m high stratovolcano in the northern part of the Indonesian island of Siau near Sulawesi.

In a north-south direction of the Karangetang has five craters openings.

Volcanic activity

The Karangetang is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. Since 1675 more than 40 eruptions have been documented.

Since July 22, 2006 it is on high alert for the mountain. On 27 July 2006, an outbreak of the second occurred during the month in which the volcanic gas cloud 2.5 km hurled high into the atmosphere and formed a lava flow. Approximately 3,900 people from six surrounding villages had to leave their villages.

On 6 August 2010, the volcano erupted and spewed lava and hot ash hundreds of meters into the air. Four people lost their lives and many more seriously injured.

On 11 March 2011, just hours after the devastating Tōhoku earthquake in Japan, there was another outbreak.
