Karatu District

Karatu is a small town in Tanzania at the entrance to Ngorongoro crater about 120 km north- west of Arusha and has about 22,000 inhabitants ( 2006 estimate ), as last officially 17,922 inhabitants ( 2002 census ). It is the seat of the district of Karatu with about 180,000 inhabitants.

Importance

The town is the center of an intensively farmed region dar. By year-round rainfall on the southern edge of the Ngorongoro Crater massif and the altitude ( Karatu town at 1534 m above sea level. NN ) offer ideal conditions for growing coffee, bananas and vegetables. This was already recognized the authorities of German East Africa which promoted here towards the end of the 19th century, the settlement of German farmers.

Karatu is the terminus of the main paved road from Arusha and last stop before the great national parks of Tanzania North. Of the tourists it has therefore received the nickname Safari Junction. There are several hotels and campsites, as well as shopping for groceries and souvenirs. With the district capital of Arusha, it is connected by several intercity buses daily.

The Athlete Filbert Bayi was born in Karatu.
