Karczew

Karczew is a city in the powiat Otwocki in the Masovian Voivodeship, Poland. Karczew is also the seat of the urban and rural commune ( gmina miejsko - wiejska ).

Geography

Karczew located 24 km south-east of Warsaw on the right bank of the Vistula.

History

Karczew received on January 21, 1548 the municipal law and the right to hold a weekly market and two fairs a year. 1577 a fire destroyed much of the city. For the reconstruction of the city the citizens adopted the taxes for several years. The train crossed the Nordic War Autumn 1704 Swedish troops in Karczew the Vistula. After the second partition of Poland came under Russian administration Karczew. 1809 Karczew was occupied by Austrian troops. 1831, the city came back under Russian administration.

From 1975 to 1998, the village belonged to the Province of Warsaw.

Geography

The municipality has a surface area of 81.49 km ². 58 % of its territory is used for agriculture, 24 % is covered by forest.

The municipality consists of the 15 sołectwo ( Soltysships ) Brzezinka, Całowanie, Glinki, Janow, Kępa Nadbrzeska, Kosumce, Łukówiec, Nadbrzeż, Ostrówek, OSTROWIEC, Otwock Maly, Otwock Wielki, Piotrowice Sobiekursk and Wygoda. As well as the village Władysławów the part of the mayor's office Kępa Nadbrzeska.

Education

The municipality has five kindergartens ( Przedszkole ), three primary schools ( szkoła podstawowa ) and a middle school ( gimnazjum ). There is a library in the community with three branches.
