Karel Urbánek

Karel Urbanek ( born March 22, 1941 in Bojkovice, district Uherské Hradiště ) is a former Czechoslovak communist politician.

Life

After working as railwaymen from 1961, he became in 1973 an official of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in the district of Brno. In 1982 he became secretary and in 1984, first secretary of the district. In 1986 he became a member of the Central Committee and in 1988 a member of the party leadership. After the fall of Milouš Jakeš during the Velvet Revolution, he was elected on 24 November 1989 as general secretary of the party. This office he retained only until 21 December 1989. Subsequently, he worked briefly at the Control Commission of the Party, in July 1990, he retired from political life.
