Karel Vinck

Karel Vinck ( born September 19, 1938 in Aalst ) is a Belgian businessman. 1994 voted him the readers of the magazine Trends for Manager of the Year. At the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven ( Leuven, Belgium ), he graduated with a Master from in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. In addition, he holds an MBA from Cornell University ( Ithaca, USA ).

Career

Karel Vinck began his career in 1971 at the Eternit -Werke and became after a short time executive director of the Italian branch. From 1978, he took a this position for the entire company. After that, he was from 1985 to 1994 Chairman of the Board (CEO) at the Belgian Bekaert metal processors. In 1995, he worked for Union Minière, where he led the restructuring of the company. Since 17 October 1994, he serves on the Board of Directors of Union Minière / Umicore, since October 1, 2002 as its chairman. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Belgian copper smelter Cumerio.

He is also on the board of Suez - Tractebel, Tessenderlo Group, represented at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie. From 2002 to January 2005, he headed the state's national Belgian railway company SNCB. Since July 2005 he is coordinator of the European Rail Traffic Management System ( ERTMS) of the European Commission.

Vinck 2012 was awarded the European Railway Award.
