Karelian Isthmus

The Karelian Isthmus (Russian Карельский перешеек Karelski pereschejek, Finnish Karjalankannas, Swedish Näset Karelska ) is an isthmus in the North -West of Russia. The 45 to 110 km wide strip of land lies to the northwest of Saint Petersburg between the Gulf of Finland and Lake Ladoga in the southwest to the northeast. The isthmus is part of the historical region of Karelia and to a lesser extent to Ingria. The area changed in the course of its history several times between Russia, Sweden and Finland, the owner, today it belongs to the Russian Leningrad Oblast.
