Karen Swassjan

Karen Arajewitsch Swassjan (Russian Карен Араевич Свасьян, scientific transliteration: Karen Araevič Svas'jan, poor Կարեն Սվասյան. ); Born January 2, 1948 in Tbilisi ) is a native of Armenia philosopher, literary scholar, cultural historian and anthroposophist.

Life and work

Karen Swassjan studied philosophy and English and French Philology in Yerevan and received his doctorate with a thesis on Bergson. In 1981 his habilitation thesis on the problem of symbol in modern philosophy. He was professor of philosophy, cultural history and aesthetics at the Yerevan State University. He also appeared as a translator into Russian and editor of Nietzsche's works ( the first post-revolutionary Russian Nietzsche edition ), Spengler (The Decline of the West ) and Rilke ( Sonnets to Orpheus ) out.

He is the author of numerous books on philosophy and anthroposophy, literature, culture and history of science, including one in the Russian-speaking widespread biography of Goethe, a history of European science and the work of Goethe's philosophy of life and of books on Nietzsche, Spengler, Husserl and Cassirer. There are also many German -language publications, in particular to anthroposophical topics.

Karen Swassjan was 1993/94 Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Bonn. In 1997 he was a visiting professor at the University of Innsbruck. Since 1993 he works as a freelance writer and lecturer in Basel.
