Karger Publishers

The S. Karger AG, Basel, is a biomedical specialist publisher. It is the largest scientific and medical publishing house in Switzerland.

Company History

The company was founded on April 1, 1890 in Berlin by Samuel Karger ( 1863-1935 ). In the same year the first book was moved Geburtshülfliche The Vademecum. Three years later, the first scientific journal, the Journal of Dermatology.

Karger GmbH was founded as an independent publishing house based in Munich, who moved to Freiburg im Breisgau in 1992.

From 1999 to 2008, Steven Karger ( 1959-2008 ) Member of the Executive Board. After his death, his sister Gabriella Karger took over (* 1964) this function. The publisher is still family owned the Kargers and has the legal form of a corporation.

The S. Karger AG has today 300 employees and subsidiaries in Freiburg im Breisgau, Paris, London, New York City, Bangalore, Bangkok, Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo and Sydney. Appear about 150 book titles per year. The publisher publishes 78 magazine titles in the field of medicine and medically related topics. The share of sales of the journals is 70 % of the books at 30 %.
