Kari Jalonen

Kari Jalonen ( born January 6, 1960 in Oulu ) is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey player and coach who played in the National Hockey League, among others, for the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers during his active from 1978 to 1996. Since September 2013 he is coach of HC Lev Prague from the Kontinental Hockey League.

Career as a player

Kari Jalonen began his career as a hockey player with Kärpät Oulu, for he held until 1982 in the SM- liiga was active from 1978 and 1981 Finnish Champion was first. He then joined as a free agent with the Calgary Flames, where he ran aground, the following two seasons in the National Hockey League. Career as a coach

After his playing career in 1998 Jalonen assistant coach at TPS Turku. After champion coach Hannu Jortikka had stepped down as coach of TPS 2001 Jalonen took over this and managed the team for two years in the SM- liiga. He was then taken from 2004 Kärpät Oulu under contract by which he was third again in the years 2005, 2007 and 2008, three times champion and 2006. He also reached with the team in 2005 and 2006, the final of the IIHF European Champions Cup, but lost his team both times, respectively the Russian representatives HK Avangard Omsk and Dynamo Moscow HK. Because of his success, he was in 2005 and 2007 awarded the Kalevi Numminen trophy - received by the coach of the year in the SM- liiga.

Between summer 2008 and April 2011 Jalonen was head coach at HIFK Helsinki and won with the club in 2011, the Finnish Championship. He was then obliged Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod of the KHL and managed it until the end of season 2012/13.

In October 2013 Jalonen became the new head coach of HC Lev Prague, after his predecessor Vaclav Sykora had asked for family reasons, to be relieved of his duties.
