Karksi-Nuia
Karksi - Nuia is a town in southern Estonia. The city belongs administratively to the municipality Karksi in Viljandi County.
History
Karksi - Nuia is located in a glacial valley between two small lakes. A proper settlement was in fact created in the second half of the 19th century homes of artisans and agricultural workers. These grouped situated between the historic manor of Karksi ( Karkus German, Swedish Karkhus ) and a tavern and the Orthodox Church of Nuia ( German Nuija ).
The villages Karksi and Nuia in 1987 to a large village ( alevik ) Karksi - Nuia together. In August 1993 Karksi - Nuia was given city rights. This decision was reversed in 1999, Karksi - Nuia is now part of the municipality Karksi.
Attractions
From cultural and historical significance of the ruins of the Order Castle of Karksi (14th century), a medieval chapel, completed in 1778 Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Orthodox Church today are ( built in 1868 ).
In the city there is the Museum of the Estonian poet August Kitzberg, who lived and wrote in the vicinity. A monument to him made of black stone stands on a hill above the village overlooking the valley.
