Karl Altmann

Karl Altmann (* 1802 in wet cheeks, † 1861 in Munich) was a German painter.

Altmann came from a long-established Jewish family. He grew up in Ansbach and studied after visiting the painting school in Munich from 1819 to 1822 at the Dresden Academy. According to a study trip through Italy, he moved to Munich, which was henceforth to be his residence. He preferred romantic, rural subjects in oil on wood or canvas. His works are, inter alia, exhibited in the Munich City Museum and at the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus. Although Altmann multiple appointments and awards were offered under the condition change of religion, he remained until his death in Judaism faithful.
