Karl Christian Agthe

Carl Christian Agthe ( born June 16, 1762 Hettstedt, † November 27, 1797 in Ballenstedt ) was a German composer and organist.

Life

One family of musicians entstammend, he entered in 1782 the office of the court organist and court Kapellmeister at the court of the Prince of Anhalt- Bernburg. The then Prince Friedrich Albrecht of Anhalt -Bernburg was his musical conveyor. After the court was moved to Ballenstedt, he followed this and resumed his former offices. At his new place of a court theater in 1787 launched. Agthe was responsible for numerous works that have been performed there. At the Ducal Court Theatre he worked until his death at the age of 35 years.

Agthe was a prolific composer. His compositions include mainly operas, dramas, concerts, libretti and songs. Here he set mainly songs and poems important poet of classical German literature. A part of his work was destroyed in the Second World War.
