Karl Dilthey

Karl Dilthey ( born March 18, 1839 in Biebrich, † March 4, 1907 in Göttingen ) was a German classical philologist and classical archaeologist.

Life

Karl Dilthey was born in 1839 the son of a Calvinist preacher family. His father was Maximilian Dilthey (1804-1867), court preacher of Nassau in Biebrich, his mother Maria Laura Heuschkel (1810-1887), daughter of the ducal Kapellmeister Johann Peter Heuschkel in Hildburghausen ( 1773-1853 ). His brother William was also a philosopher, his sister Caroline was married to the philologist Hermann Usener.

After studying at the universities of Breslau and Bonn Dilthey undertook research trips to Greece. By 1866/67 he was a lecturer in Bonn. From 1867 to 1869 he worked in Rome and then became professor of classical philology and archeology at the University of Zurich. In 1878 he moved to Göttingen to the Chair of Classical Philology. In 1889 he became Professor of Classical Archaeology in succession by Friedrich Wieseler. After meadow moth death he became in 1892 director of the archaeological and numismatic collections of the University and was admitted as a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen.

After his death, Gustav Körte was appointed as his successor.
