Karl Eichwald

Karl Eduard von Eichwald (Russian Эдуард Иванович Эйхвальд, Eduard Ivanovich Eichwald, born July 4, 1795 in Jelgava, .. † 4 Novemberjul / November 16 1876greg in Saint Petersburg ) was a naturalist with focal points in geology and zoology.

Eichwald studied in Berlin and Vienna, science and medicine since 1814, was a lecturer at Dorpat in 1821 and in 1823 professor of zoology and childbirth customer in Kazan. From here he went to great expeditions to the shores of the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus.

Displaced as a Russian State Council and Professor of Zoology and Obstetrics 1827 Vilnius, he served there as resistant secretary in 1832 established medico - surgical academy and received in 1838 the lectern zoology and mineralogy at the medico - surgical academy in St. Petersburg.

On larger trips he undertook in 1836 by Upper Italy and Switzerland, in 1838 by Estonia and Finland, the government Petersburg and by the Scandinavian kingdoms, he pursued mainly geological purposes. Appointed professor of paleontology at the Petersburg Mountain Institute, he turned to the study of antediluvian remains found in Russia, which led him in 1846 to a journey through the Eifel, Tyrol, Italy, Sicily and Algeria. He reported in the work of Natural History remarks, as a contribution to comparative geology (Stuttgart 1851). In 1851 he retired and died in 1876 in St. Petersburg.

Writings

Oak Forest, has acquired great merit to the geognostical, botanical and zoological exploration of the Russian Empire. From his writings are:
