Karl Friedrich Mohr

Karl Friedrich Mohr ( * November 4, 1806 in Koblenz, † September 28, 1879 in Bonn ) was a German scientist, pharmacist and chemist who has rendered outstanding services in particular in the field of dimensional analysis.

Life and career

Mohr studied three semesters botany, chemistry and mineralogy at the Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. He then completed an apprenticeship in his father pharmacist operation. In 1828 he enrolled as a student of pharmacy at the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg, where he heard above all the lectures by Leopold Gmelin. In 1831 he moved to Berlin with Heinrich Rose to study, went there because of the rampant cholera but soon returned to Heidelberg, where he in 1832 Dr. phil. received his doctorate. Then he returned to the " Moors Pharmacy " back, which he headed from 1841 after the death of his father.

During this time he was active in many areas of political and economic life of Koblenz. He was co-founder in 1835 of the trade association and also its first chairman. He was also a member of the city council and in 1849 was elected to the Prussian House of Representatives. 1852 he was appointed the mayor of the city of Koblenz in a commission for the establishment of a trade school, which was opened in 1855 in Kramerzunfthaus and out of which today's Eichendorff -Gymnasium. After the sale of the pharmacy he joined in 1857 as a partner in the chemical factory " Friedrich Nienhaus & Comp. " His son- in. In the same year he moved to a newly acquired estate in Metternich. With the liquidation of the factory (1864 ), he lost large parts of its assets. In the same year he completed his habilitation in Berlin and then again in Bonn, where he gave his inaugural speech free. He was first a lecturer, from 1867 then an associate professor of pharmacy at the Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. 1879 Mohr died of pneumonia, the burial took place at the old cemetery in Bonn. 1914 monument at the Kaiser- Wilhelm-Ring (today Friedrich- Ebert-Ring ) it was built, the resulting bust now stands at a new base in Koblenz at the entrance of the Eichendorff -Gymnasium.

On the Mohr titration method goes back to Mohr, see titration according to Mohr. He also developed some laboratory equipment such as the Quetschhahnbürette and the Mohr- Westphal balance and invented the cork borer and the measuring pipette.
