Karl Gottlieb von Windisch (Hungarian Windisch or Vindis Károly, Latin Carolus Theophil Windisch; born January 28, 1725 in Bratislava, † March 30, 1793 ibid ) was a merchant, a private scholar, editor and historian.

Life

After attending school in the country (including the famous Evangelical Lyceum in Bratislava ) and a longer stay abroad ( Augsburg), to Windisch initially operated as a merchant. As a result of his life he held various offices, first in his home town ( senator, City captain ) and was from 1789 Mayor of Bratislava. Windisch, which in German, Hungarian, Slovak, Italian, Latin, and probably also mastered the English language, became a central figure in the literary life in the Kingdom of Hungary, as evidenced by an extensive correspondence. In addition to publishing numerous historical and geographical works, in particular his work is emphasized as editor of the first ( German ) scholarly journals in the Kingdom of Hungary. In recognition of his scientific work, he was appointed honorary member of the Augsburg, Olomouc and Altdorfer learned societies. He may also have been instrumental during the 1758 or 1762 on the establishment of a Learned Society in Bratislava. This was the Pressburgische Society of Friends of Sciences. Windisch died in 1793. He held the office of mayor at that time, and published its own magazine entitled New Ungrisches magazine.
