Karl Harrer

Karl Harrer (* November 8, 1890; † September 5, 1926 ) was a sports journalist and besides Anton Drexler, Gottfried Feder founding member of the German Workers 'Party (DAP ), from which emerged the National Socialist German Workers' Party ( NSDAP).

Founding of the German Workers' Party

Harrer was a sports journalist for the "Munich Observer ", which, since 1918 owned by the anti-Semitic Thule Society, as " Independent newspaper for national and ethnic politics " ( subtitles ) on its political character left no doubt. On behalf of the chief editor and founder of the Thule Society, Rudolf von Sebottendorf to Harrer engaged in building the German Workers' Party, should affect the working of social democratic and communist milieu with anti-Semitic and nationalist ideas. On 5 January 1919 he became the first chairman ( " Reich Chairman ") of the DAP. Anton Drexler was Chairman of the Munich local group. In attendance were about 24 people, mostly railroad workers from the colleagues of Drexler.

Power struggle with Drexler and Hitler

Karl Harrer had the plan, the DAP to run like a secret society modeled after the Thule Society. This collided with the intentions of Adolf Hitler, who had joined the party on 19 October 1919 and Anton Drexler. After their presentation, the party should reach the masses. Towards the end of 1919, the rivalry between Harrer and Hitler stepped out into the open; Harrer accused Hitler of megalomania. He resigned on January 5, 1920 by all party posts after he had the intention of Hitler in early 1920 to hold a mass meeting rejected and suffered a defeat. The party leader went first in the sequence of Drexler and a few months later to Hitler.

Hitler Harrer

" The then first chairman of the party, Mr. Harrer, was actually a journalist and certainly formed comprising as such. But he had an extremely heavy burden for a party leader: he was not a speaker for the masses. So painfully conscientious and accurate was his work per se, so it lacked, however - perhaps due to the lack of great oratorical talent - the larger and more momentum. "

1920-1926

Harrer died, not even 36 years old, on 5 September 1926 in Munich a natural death.
