Karl Heinrich von Metternich-Winneburg

Karl Heinrich von Metternich - Winneburg ( born July 15, 1622 Koblenz, † September 26th 1679 in Aschaffenburg ) was on 9 January 1679 to his death Archbishop of Mainz, from January 30, 1679 Bishop of Worms. He is buried in Mainz Cathedral.

Biography

Karl Heinrich came from the house of Metternich - Winneburg. He was the son of the Emperor's Imperial War Council and Viscount Wilhelm von Metternich - Winneburg in Eger and his wife Eleonora born of Brömser from Rüdesheim. In 1647 he came with his family in Swedish captivity and was only released on a large ransom. On 5 April 1655 he was Domscholaster in Mainz, 1664-1666 he was rector of the University of Mainz, in 1665 he received priestly ordination in 1674 he was promoted to Domkustos.

On January 9, 1679 he was elected Bishop of Mainz, on 30 January the same year also for Worms Pastors. The confirmation Bull of Pope Innocent XI. arrived at only after his death; he no longer received episcopal consecration.

During his brief tenure as bishop -elect of two dioceses, he managed to move the " Welschnonnen " Augustinian choir women from Luxembourg, to improve the school system to Mainz. The nuns met but only after his death. In this Mainz built a monastery and church.

In the inaugural trip in the northern part diocese he retired to a catarrh and soon died of a stroke in Aschaffenburg.
