Karl-Heinz Bußert

Karl -Heinz Bussert ( born January 8, 1955 in Brandenburg ( Havel ) ) is a retired German rower and current rowing coach, who competed for East Germany. In 1976 he succeeded in the quadruple sculls Olympic victory.

Career

Bussert grew up in the Brandenburg district Kirchmöser and began at BSG Motor Plaue with the rowing. In the local training center, supervised by the SG Dynamo Potsdam, his talent was discovered and he soon delegated to the sports club to Potsdam. Here began his career where he achieved most of his success. In 1975, he finished in the GDR championship in double sculls second place, but for the SC Dynamo Berlin. The following year he went as a substitute for the 1976 Olympic Games to Montreal. After Martin Winterkorn failed with appendicitis, Bussert moved to the sculls and won the Olympic gold medal with a second ahead of the boat from the Soviet Union. He was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver for this success.

In the following years Bussert was a fixture in the quadruple sculls of the GDR, he won to 1982 in five world championships in a row, but was absent in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. In 1983, he lost with the quadruple sculls at the World Cup against the boat from the Federal Republic of Germany. This was the first defeat of the GDR double quartet, since the boat class was included in the program of World Championships in 1974. 1984 Bussert rowed together with Rüdiger Reiche in the double sculls and also won in the championships of the GDR, but missed the 1984 Olympics because of the Olympic boycott the GDR. 1985 Bussert joined one last time with the sculls of the DDR and won silver behind the Canadian Boat, for which he again received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

Bussert is a skilled maintenance mechanic and was a member of SG Dynamo Potsdam member of the German People's Police. In addition to sports, he studied political science and, after the conclusion of the district office of the German People's Police Potsdam. Today, he is a trainer at the National Rowing Federation Brandenburg and member of the successor club of SG Dynamo Potsdam, Potsdamer Rowing Society.
