Karl Johann Bernhard Karsten

Carl Karsten, Karl Karsten (* November 26, 1782 in Biitzow; † August 22, 1853 in Schöneberg; Complete name: Carl Johann Bernhard Karsten ) was a German mineralogist and metallurgist.

Life and work

Carl Karsten, the second son of agronomist Lorenz Karsten, first studied in Rostock rights, later medicine, then turned, metallurgy and mining customer to. After he served in various positions in Silesia, he was appointed in 1819 as the Secret Oberbergrat in the Interior Ministry in Berlin.

In the aftermath Karsten has contributed a lot to the development of the iron and steel industry in Germany; in particular the emergence of the zinc industry in Silesia is due to him. He published numerous books on metallurgy and mining.

He went into retirement in 1851 and died on 22 August 1853 in Schöneberg in Berlin.

Carl Karsten was married since August 1, 1808 Adelaide Rosenstiel ( 1788-1861 ), a daughter of Friedrich Philipp Rosenstiel, director of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory ( KPM ) in Berlin. Adelaide's older sister Henriette was 1817, the second wife of the graphic artist and sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow, who later dictated Karsten parts of his memories.

Carl and Adelaide Karsten had seven children, including Hermann Karsten (1809-1877), professor of mathematics and mineralogy in Rostock, Gustav Karsten, a professor of physics in Kiel, was concerned with the physics of the oceans, and Lorenz Karsten, Judicial Council in Berlin. The latter two were also member of parliament.
