Karl Josef Becker

Karl Josef Becker SJ Cardinal ( born April 18, 1928 in Cologne) is a Roman Catholic theologian and dogmatists.

Life

After leaving school at Epiphany School in Cologne Becker studied from 1946 to 1948 three semesters of classical philology at the University of Cologne and entered the Society of Jesus on 13 April 1948. In the novitiate followed from 1950 to 1953 to study philosophy at the Jesuit high school Pullach and 1955-1959 a study of Catholic theology at the Jesuit high school Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main. On July 31, 1958 Becker was ordained a priest.

In 1964, he was the doctrine of justification by Domingo de Soto with the work. Thinking before a council participant, during and after Trent Dr. theol. doctorate and taught until 1969 dogmatics at the Philosophical- Theological College Sankt Georgen. From 1969 he taught at the Pontifical Gregorian University and was appointed in 1971 to associate professor in 1975 and full professor of dogmatic theology. In 2003 he became Professor Emeritus.

In solemn consistory of February 18, 2012 Pope Benedict XVI took him. as cardinal deacon with the title of San Giuliano Martire diakonia in the College of Cardinals. Because of his at that time already advanced age of 83 years dispensed him Benedict XVI. from the obligation of a bishop's consecration. On 22 April 2012, the seizure of his titles was diakonia. At the conclave in 2013, he took no further part because of the age limit.

Work

As dogmatists were his main teaching and research areas in the sacraments and the doctrine of grace. Becker is an expert in the Second Vatican Council, in particular for its statements on religious freedom and ecumenism, and engaged in the discussion of Lumen Gentium. He is a doctor father of Guido Pozzo, Alexandra of Teuffenbach and Werner Guballa.

Pope Paul VI. Becker appointed on 15 September 1977 consultant to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in which he with their damaligem prefect Joseph Ratzinger worked together since 1982.

The Pope Benedict XVI. much appreciated Becker was involved in the preparation of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of the Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation and since 2009 took part in the discussions between the Holy See and the SSPX.
