Karl Kohaut

Karl Ignaz von Kohaut (also: Cohaut or Kohot ) ( baptized August 26, 1726 in Vienna, † August 6, 1784 ) was an Austrian lutenist, composer and official.

Life

Karl Kohaut was the son of Jacob Carl Kohaut, court musician at Obersthofmeister Prince Adam Franz Karl Schwarzenberg. Karl Kohaut was from 1758 civil servants and from 1778 Secretary of the Imperial Court and State. By Joseph II, he was knighted about 1766. About his musical education, nothing is known. In the circle of Baron Gottfried van Swieten he learned the cantatas of Bach and Handel oratorios know. He also worked there as a violinist with the string quartets of Haydn and Mozart. Kohaut was in his time considered the best lutenist Vienna. Ernst Ludwig Gerber referred to him in his " Musicalisches lexicon " of 1790 as "the greatest living lutenist now ".

Kohaut created numerous works with sounds in various occupations. On March 17, 1777, he took over at a concert of the "Musician - firm " the solo part in one of his lute concerts. In Melk Abbey, the cantata " Applausus Mellicensis " was 1764 in the presence of Emperor Joseph II, whom he accompanied to Frankfurt listed. In Melk and Göttweig its fairs were often played.

Karl Kohaut is often confused with the unrelated Bohemian composer Josef Kohaut.
