Karl Meiler

Karl Meiler ( born April 30, 1949 in Erlangen ) is a former German tennis player.

Career

Karl Meiler led 1974-1979 five years the German tennis ranking as number 1. In the 1970s and early 1980s, he represented together with Hans -Jürgen Fassbender Jürgen Pohmann and, later, Uli Pinner the German tennis. Karl Meiler won four ATP singles titles, including against Jimmy Connors in 1974 in Omaha and Guillermo Vilas in 1972 in Buenos Aires. Furthermore, it reached 16 ATP finals in singles. At the German Open in 1973 he reached the final, but lost to the Americans Eddie Dibbs. Even more successful Karl Meiler was with 17 titles in doubles, especially with Jürgen Fassbender and Wojciech Fibak. With Fibak 1976 he won the ATP Double World Championship in Kansas City. He also played 13 years ( 1967-1979 ) for the German Davis Cup team. Karl Meiler in 1971 was a co-founder of the ATP.

From 1985 to 1997 Karl Meiler acted as a German national coach and was responsible for the B-team. These included, among others, Michael Stich, Carl- Uwe Steeb, Bernd Karbacher, David Prinosil, Jens Knippschild and Rainer Schuettler. He then worked as a private trainer for German and Austrian tennis pros.
