Karl, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst

Karl Wilhelm von Anhalt- Zerbst ( born October 16, 1652 Zerbst, † November 3, 1718 ibid ) from the family of Ascanians was from 1667 to his death reigning prince of Anhalt- Zerbst.

Life

Karl Wilhelm was the third son of Prince Johann of Anhalt- Zerbst (1621-1667) from his marriage to Sophie Auguste (1630-1680), daughter of Duke Friedrich III. of Holstein- Gottorp. Upon the death of his father, still a minor, ruled from 1667 to 1674 his mother together with Landgrave Louis VI. as guardian of Hesse- Darmstadt and Prince Johann Georg II of Anhalt- Dessau.

Karl Wilhelm was the founder of the Zerbst Castle ( 1681) and the Lutheran Church of St. Trinity Church in Zerbst, which were initiated both in 1696. The construction of the Holy Trinity Church ended a long dispute with the Reformed congregation in Zerbst, the Nicolai church was left. In Coswig Zerbst and Karl Wilhelm was also set up in 1691 or 1701 schools.

The prince resided long in Jever, which had fallen in 1667 by Karl Wilhelm grandmother at the house Zerbst. To have rule Jever he came into conflict with the Kingdom of Denmark.

Under the company name The Shatt gel density, he was accepted as a member of the literary Fruitbearing society.

Marriage and issue

Karl Wilhelm married on June 18, 1676 in Halle ( Saale) Sophie ( 1654-1724 ), daughter of Duke Augustus of Saxe - Weissenfels, with whom he had the following children:
