Karl Ullmann

Carl Christian Ullmann ( born March 15, 1796 in Epfenbach at Heidelberg; † January 12, 1865 in Karlsruhe ) was a Reformed theologian and prelate mediation of the Evangelical Church in Baden.

Life and career

Ullmann was born as the son of the pastor Johann Balthasar Ullmann and his wife Charlotte nee Reimold. A sister Ullmann died in infancy. To learn Latin he came to his uncle in Mosbach, where he first went to school. At the age of ten he came to Heidelberg to Churches Maurer to visit the local high school can. At age 16, he passed from the High School. From 1812 he studied theology in Heidelberg and Tübingen, habilitated in 1819 in Heidelberg as a lecturer, before he received a doctorate in phil. In 1821 he was appointed extraordinary, in 1826 a full professor of theology. Already in 1824 he married Hulda Mereau, the daughter of Sophie Mereau, the second wife of Clemens Brentano, but died in 1832. In 1829 he accepted an appointment as a professor in Halle, where he teaches church history, dogmatics and symbolism. In 1835 he married Thekla of the devil, the friend of his first wife.

In 1836 he was Churches and 1844 Privy Council of Churches. In 1853 he was appointed as the successor of Louis Hüffell to the Protestant prelates and member of the High Church Council of Baden. He was so spiritual leader of the church authorities, who headed a secular Director of the High Church Council with Baron von Woellwarth. From 1856 he also took over the office and thus united both management functions of the Baden regional church in a person. In 1861 he retired and four years later he died.

Since 1828, he was with Friedrich Wilhelm Karl Umbreit in Hamburg Theological studies and criticisms out.

In his essay "The essence of Christianity " from 1845, he explained that in his view, Christianity is independent of the orthodox rules of life, and that between faith and dogmatism, a distinction should be made. His most important historical works are " Gregory of Nazianzus " (1825 ) and " The Reformers before the Reformation " ( 2 volumes, 1841). Another well-known work is " The sinlessness of Jesus " (1854 ).

Besides his numerous writings Ullmann also set for the work of Gustav -Adolf -Werk one.
