Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Müller

Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Müller, Karl Wilhelm Mueller and Karl Mueller, also in the spelling of Carl, Latinized Carlus Müller or Carolus Mullerus, in France as Charles Müller ( born February 13, 1813 in Clausthal, † 1894 in Göttingen ) was a German classical philologist, Paläograf, historian and cartographer.

Life and work

Karl Müller and his brother Theodor came as sons of a merchant to the world. Both studied at the University of Göttingen, and later taught at the Theodor as a linguist and Anglist. Karl Müller received his doctorate with the work of De Aeschyli Septem contra Thebas. He first embarked on a college career and was still in 1836 a secondary school teacher at the Gymnasium in Clausthal. In 1840 he retired from the education service as a private scholar and went to Paris. Research travels took him to Spain, London, Rome and Constantinople Opel. He searched the archives for old manuscripts of ancient authors. In France Muller, who published in French, and English, as a representative of the local German classics that enjoyed global supremacy at that time. Müller was primarily for his publication of the Fragmenta historicorum Graecorum ( five volumes, 1841-1884, together with his brother (Vol. 1) and Victor Langlois (Vol. 5, 2) ) and the geographical Graeci minores (short GGM, 1855 to 1861, in the series Scriptorum Graecorum known bibliotheca the publisher Johann Friedrich Dübner the publisher Ambroise Firmin Didot ). Although the issue of Fragmenta historicorum Graecorum primarily thanks to the Müller started by careful scientific apparatus was much appreciated, its importance is almost entirely disappeared since the processing of fragments of Greek historians by Felix Jacoby. The work on the geographical Graeci minores wore early as 1855 with the creation of a map ( tabulae ) fruit. It culminated in a card factory with nearly 50 cards, the An atlas of ancient geography followed, published 1872-1874 by John Murray in London. In this work, Müller processed not only the philological, but also the archaeological discoveries of its time. After Dübner 1867 was passed, Müller took over his work on Firmin Didot's publisher. The collaboration difficult due attacks from outside as difficult as the Byzantinist Emmanuel Miller Firmin Didot - accused an anti-French attitude. Thus, it came in the aftermath only to a few publications. Since 1869, Müller seems to have taken his main residence again in Hannover. The 1883-1901 - partly posthumously - published edition of Geographike Hyphegesis of Claudius Ptolemy has long been the standard edition of the work.
