Karl-Wilhelm Welwei

Karl- Wilhelm Welwei (born 17 October 1930 in Witten; † August 25, 2013 ) was a German historian.

The son of a merchant put on the Witten high school for boys, now Ruhr -Gymnasium Witten, the Abitur. He studied history, Latin Language and sports science at the University and the Sports University in Cologne. In 1956 he passed the state examination. Since April 1957, he worked as a teacher at the high school Witten Ruhr. Welwei 1963 in Cologne PhD with Hans Volkmann with the work of kings and kingship in the judgment of Polybius. He habilitated in 1970/71 at the University of Bochum with studies on the use of serfs in ancient military service. From 1972 until his retirement in 1996 he was Professor of Ancient History and Auxiliary Historical Sciences in Bochum. Since 1993 Welwei was a member of the German Archaeological Institute.

Welwei was considered one of the best connoisseurs of the history of ancient Greece and also enjoyed an excellent international reputation. Several of his publications, often written for a wider audience, have now become standard works (eg The Greek polis, Athens, Classical Athens. Democracy and power politics in the 5th and 4th centuries, as well as a presentation of Sparta ). The last major study, he had an overall view of the ancient Greek story published until the beginning of Hellenism ( 2011). The presentation was chosen in January 2012 by the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the Norddeutscher Rundfunk under the ten best non-fiction books of the month. His research interests were in addition to the ancient Greece, the Roman Empire ( Republic and Early Empire ) and the Roman- Germanic relations; on the latter topic he published together with the medievalists Hans -Werner Goetz and Steffen Patzold a source collection in two volumes. It contains important literary sources to the Germans until the migration period in a bilingual and annotated edition.

Welwei died on 25 August 2013, and was buried on 2 September of the year in the Protestant cemetery Witten- Bommern.
