Karl Woermann

Karl Woermann ( born July 4, 1844 in Hamburg, † February 4, 1933 in Dresden ) was a German art historian and gallery director. Woermann was a member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig.

Life

Karl Woermann was baptized as the eldest son of the Hamburg merchant and shipowner Carl Woermann originally the name of the Father ( " Carl" ) and should take over his father's company. However, since it is - in contrast to his brother Adolph Woermann - not for sale trade, but for interested in art, called the father of him to change the spelling of his first name to " Charles ". The family business was taken over by Adolph, but Carl also promoted Karl still in its interests.

According to a study trip to India, Japan and Egypt, Karl Woermann undertook at the age of 16, he studied law in Heidelberg, Göttingen and Kiel ( member of the Corps Saxonia Kiel), received a doctorate in law. (Göttingen) and settled in 1868 as a lawyer in Hamburg down. A journey through France, Great Britain and North America aroused his interest in the history of art. He gave up his law practice and studied in Heidelberg art history, became in 1871 a second doctorate ( PhD on the scenic natural sense of the Greeks and Romans ) and his Habilitation in Heidelberg as a lecturer in art history and archeology.
