Karlivka

Karliwka (Ukrainian Карлівка; Russian Карловка / Karlovka ) is a city in central Ukraine Poltava Oblast on the banks of the river Ortschyk. It is the administrative seat of the homonymous Rajons and is divided administratively into the city and the two settlements Iwaniwka / Іванівка and Solona Balka / Солона Балка.

History

Karliwka was founded in the late 17th century or early 18th century. First, the town developed slowly and grew until 1897 to 3,600 inhabitants. In Soviet times, the industry has been greatly expanded, so that Karliwka took a rapid upswing. So the place in 1939 already 10.300 inhabitants. The brand continued to grow even after the Second World War, so that Karliwka, which received city status in 1957 and 1989 grew to 20,059 inhabitants. As part of the transition crisis, the population but over 10 % to 17,658 inhabitants (2003 ) declined.

Economy, education and transport

The economic focus Karliwkas is on the engineering and the food industry. The city has a professional school with about 650 students. By Karliwka one connected to the European road E runs the regional road R -18, on which 20 km northwest 40 between Poltava and Kharkiv. In the opposite direction the road meets 28 km southeast Krasnohrad in the E 195 between Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv. Furthermore Karliwka has a connection to the railway line Poltava - Krasnohrad - Donetsk.
