Chief and highest Lama of the Karma Kagyu school

The Gyalwa Karmapa have a long tradition in the history of Tibet. The first Gyalwa Karmapa was more Düsum Khyenpa ( German: " connoisseurs of the three times " ), who founded the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism ( Vajrayana ) as an independent line. In the 13th century has been - as a kind of spiritual succession - the system of Trülkus, introduced the " conscious rebirths " of the Karma Kagyu. The second Gyalwa Karmapa Karma Pakshi (1206-1283) had prophesied that he would reincarnate and determine his successor so. This system continues to this day. Conscious incarnations of lamas were made at the time before the Karma Pakshi, the Gyalwa Karmapa announced their rebirths, however, in letters, poems or similar to each. Karmapa's coming was announced from the perspective of the Karma Kagyu at the time of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni. Even before his appearance as Gyalwa Karmapa there should have been incarnations of the Karmapa as Saraha or as Guru Chöwang, one of the 25 main disciples of Guru Rinpoche.

Gyalwa Karmapa will be in Tibetan Buddhism as people ( nirmanakaya ) viewed, who decided out of compassion, through reincarnation again in the life or " in the ordinary human existence " to enter in order to serve other beings, although they as enlightened beings ( Bodhisattva ) the cycle of rebirth could leave. They are regarded as an emanation of Avalokiteshvara (Tib. spyan ras gzigs; Chenrezig ) of the bodhisattva of compassion - just as the Dalai Lama of the Gelug Order, which are also seen as manifestations of Avalokiteshvara since the 15th century. While this is in a religious context without internal contradiction ( a Bodhisattva can manifest itself in many forms ), it reflects politically resist a historical conflict between the two orders, the military was decided under the 5th Dalai Lama with the help of the Mongols for the benefit of Gelugpa.

The manifestations Karmapa are considered in the Karma Kagyu as inseparable from the manifestations of Guru Rinpoche. The Gyalwa Karmapa is the highest lama in the Karma Kagyu an important person, especially in the practice of Guru Yoga.

The identity of the current 17th Karmapa is disputed. Currently, there are two people who are enthroned as the 17th incarnation of the Karmapa: Ugyen Thrinle Dorje and Thaye Dorje Thrinle. Both are each supported by high-ranking lamas within the Karma Kagyu lineage; a process which has led to a split in the Karma Kagyu lineage.
