Karol Sidon

Karol Sidon ( born August 9, 1942 in Prague, Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia; Ephraim Ben Alexander) is a Czech rabbi and writer.

Life

Sidon grew up in Prague as a child of non-religious parents. After graduation in 1960 Karol Sidon studied at FAMU, wrote screenplays and was a short time for the Czechoslovak Radio, including as author of radio plays, works. Until 1968 he headed the drama in the studio of Jiří Trnka. From 1968 until its dissolution, he worked as editor of the Literární listy. He is one of the signatories of Charter 77 in 1978, he received the Jiří Kolář - exile price.

1978 Sidon converted to Judaism and took the other name Ephraim. In 1983 he traveled from West Germany, where he studied Jewish Studies at the College of Jewish Studies in Heidelberg. He returned in 1992 to the Czech Republic back. Since 1992 he has been Chief Rabbi of Prague and the country 's chief rabbi. On 21 November 2005, he was re-elected. Karol Sidon is the father of actress Magdalena Sidonová.
