Karolina of Legnica-Brieg

Charlotte von Liegnitz - Brieg - Wohlau ( born December 2, 1652 Brieg, † December 24, 1707 in Breslau) was Duchess of Legnica, Brieg and Wohlau and by marriage Duchess of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Wiesenburg.

Life

Her parents were Christian Duke of Liegnitz, Brieg and Wohlau and Luise von Anhalt, daughter of Prince John Casimir. A few months after her father's death she married on July 14, 1672 secretly with Duke Frederick of Holstein -Sonderburg- Wiesenburg ( 1652-1724 ), whom she had met the end of 1671, when he on his way to Hungary stopped off in Brieger lock their parents. The wedding took place without the knowledge of Charlotte's mother at night instead of in the Brieger castle. Although the couple was Protestant, the marriage ceremony was performed by a Catholic priest. This placed Duchess Luise in trouble. From their advisors their failure was accused, so they called for an end to their reign. These circumstances ultimately led probably to the fact that Charlotte's younger brother Georg Wilhelm was prematurely declared of age, so that he could take over the government in the three principalities of their own.

After long debates the connection between marriage and Charlotte Duke Frederick was legalized with a formal marriage contract on 10 May in 1673. This marriage contract was recognized by the Emperor Leopold I on July 15, 1673. On January 12, 1674 Charlotte gave birth to a son, who received the imperial name Leopold ( 1674-1744 ).

Duchess Charlotte, who lived apart in later years of her husband, died in 1707 in Breslau. Her body was buried in the chapel of the monastery Hedwig Trebnitzgrund. In the royal crypt of St. John's Church Liegnitzer shown in an alabaster statue.

Charlotte was the last Duchess of the family of Silesian Piast Dynasty, which was extinguished in 1675 in the male strain already with the death of her brother Georg Wilhelm I..
