Karolina Å prem

Karolina Šprem ( born October 25, 1984 in Varaždin, SR Croatia ) is a former Croatian tennis player.

Career

Karolina Šprem that began with nine years with the sport of tennis, was with 17 professional. She won in her career on the ITF Women's Circuit ten singles and one doubles title.

She had often struggled with injuries, which she threw back a long way from 17th in the world rankings, which she held in October 2004. In Croatian Fed Cup team, she was the undisputed number 1 Šprem was known for her uncompromising play and their hard hitting groundstrokes. They celebrated their biggest success in 2004 with the quarter-finals at the All England Championships at Wimbledon, where she then retired against Lindsay Davenport. Previously, she defeated Venus Williams in a curious match 7-6, 7-6. Here, the chair umpire miscounted in the tie-break of the second set in their favor.

At the beginning of 2006, they already lost in the preparatory tournaments for the Australian Open on the Gold Coast and in Canberra each have their first round game. In May 2006 Šprem reached the quarter-finals in Istanbul. She beat her compatriot Jelena Kostanic Tosic, before the German number one, Anna -Lena Grönefeld subject. By reaching the third round they achieved their best result at the French Open. Here she defeated first the set Jelena Lichowzewa 6:1, 6:1, but then defeated Venus Williams with 5:7 and 3:6. At Wimbledon, she won her first round match against local favorite Anne Keothavong 6-2, 6-0 before she defeated Marion Bartoli in the second round with 3:6, 6:2, 6:3. In the third round, however, she had to set the position of ten Nicole Vaidišová with 5:7, 5:7 beaten.

2008 Karolina Šprem celebrated after elbow surgery comeback. In Amelia Islands defeated after a long injury break the top ten player Daniela Hantuchova and Japan's top player Ai Sugiyama. Again, she was eliminated by Lindsay Davenport, though extremely scarce.
